Attorney Gillis is a graduate of Thomas Goode Jones School of Law. She attended Spelman College, where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Economics. She is originally from Montgomery, AL and a product of the Montgomery Public School system. She graduated high school from Loveless Academic Magnet Program High School (LAMP) in Montgomery, AL. She is a member of St. John's AME Church, Alabama State Bar Association,
Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, and the Montgomery (AL) Chapter of
The Links, Incorporated. She also serves as a board member on the Baptist Health Care Foundation. Gillis was a participant in the Alabama Leadership Initiative, Class II. She also completed the James W. Wright Leadership Development Institute, a collaborative program with the National Bar Association Judicial Council. During the pandemic, Gillis co-founded a nonprofit called
Until We Do It alongside three other women with the mission to provide PPE to communities most in need. They worked with organizations, celebrities, companies and government officials across the United States to distribute almost one million masks. They were also featured on “
The Today Show” and in
Vogue magazine. Until We Do It had remarkable partnerships with
Cosmopolitan magazine, Rent the Runway, New Balance and The Real Real. Recently, Gillis was featured in CentrAL! Magazine as a "
Woman to Watch."
