H. Lewis Gillis
Gillis earned a Bachelor’s Degree from Tuskegee University and a Juris Doctorate from Emory University. Gillis also earned a Master's Degree in Criminal Justice from Auburn University Montgomery. Gillis served in the United States Army in the Judge Advocate General’s Corps and retired as a Lieutenant Colonel from the Alabama-Army National Guard.
In 2005, Gillis received a number of awards for excellence in the legal profession and for his contributions to the community. The Birmingham Times selected Gillis as Best Attorney of 2005, as the result of its annual Reader’s Choice Awards. The Alabama Lawyer’s Association (ALA) selected Gillis as the first recipient of the Arthur D. Shores Distinguished Services Award. The award recognizes an ALA member who best personifies the ideals and interests of an attorney and civic leader, Arthur D. Shores.
Gillis possesses extensive litigation experience. He served as Chief Deputy District Attorney for Montgomery County, Alabama from 1980-1983. In this office he tried more than one-hundred fifty cases including capital murder cases and other serious felony offenses.
Notable trials include the Birmingham “jail house records tampering case” where the Chief of Police, a lieutenant and a sergeant faced criminal charges. In Gillis defense of the sergeant, who was assigned to Mayor Richard Arrington, Gillis made the bold and unusual move of calling the District Attorney as a witness and this move proved to be the impetus of the only successful defense (not guilty) of the three persons tried, each having separate trials. Gillis has been called upon and has successfully defended Judicial Officials at the federal, state, and county levels.
Other notable trials featured Gillis as an integral member of the legal defense team for Richard Scrushy, the former HealthSouth CEO, who was successfully defended and acquitted of all criminal charges stemming from the alleged $2.7 billion accounting fraud at the company Scrushy founded. This was the first trial under the then new Sarbanes- Oxley Act, aka the “Public Company Accounting Reform and Investor Protection Act.” Gillis also represented Senator Quinton Ross in the alleged Alabama vote buying conspiracy (also known as the Bingo Corruption trial) and earned an acquittal of all charges for Senator Ross; and most recently he was called in to represent former Governor Robert Bentley during the sentencing phase of his case. He most recently represented the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) as Receiver for Colonial Bank v. Credit Suisse, RBS, Morgan Stanley, et al. involving residential mortgage backed securities and McKesson Corporation in various opioid litigation matters in Alabama. Gillis also served as the Trial Committee Co-Chair in the landmark Blue Cross Blue Shield Multidistrict Litigation concerning antitrust violations.
He also served as a municipal court judge for the City of Montgomery for 16 years and thereafter was selected to handle a number of civil cases in defense of the City of Montgomery and/or its various departments.
Lewis Gillis has acquired the reputation of being one of the best litigators in the State of Alabama. He surrounds himself with a team of attorneys who represent clients on local and regional levels. His success is based on his experience and his belief that “hard work” makes all the difference.
Gillis formerly served on the Board of Trustees for Huntingdon College in Montgomery, AL and for Alabama A & M University in Huntsville, AL. He currently serves on the Board of Directors for the Frank M. Johnson Institute and the Montgomery Area Council on Aging (MACOA). He is a member of St. John's AME Church, Alabama State Bar Association, a “Fellow” in the Alabama Law Foundation, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated, Grand Lodge of the State of Alabama, Prince Hall Masons, and Sigma Pi Phi Fraternity, Inc. (Boule`).
